23 – Disappointments
I have been disappointed by various things lately:
1) Suvudu cagematch – I hoped it will be a fun geeky pastime, instead it became stupid popularity contest
2) 2010 istrakon collection of stories “Dimenzija tajne” – I was right when I expected it to be the best istrakon collection so far. It has only 10 stories (compared with 30-35, as it was usual until now), therefore the number of badly written stories is reduced to 0 or maybe 1. But I expected the collection to be even better, so I am disappointed because my expectations didn’t fulfill.
3) Firefox. AGAIN. I have been using IE all the time, but some 5-6 years ago I tried Firefox for couple of months. I didn’t like it then and I returned to IE. Now I’ve decided to join twitter and I wanted to have a twitter toolbar like “friendbar” or something. Well, the easiest way was to install Firefox, because “friendbar” doesn’t work with IE. So, now I use both, IE and Firefox. I must say, IE is much faster and much more stabile.
4) Twitter. Since I have joined, my cybertime can be divided into two fazes:
Faze A) – OMG this twitter sucks, there is no one online, no activity whatsoever, and where are all those people?
Faze B) – OMG doesn’t Neil Gaiman have something better to do? He’s like tweeting 24/7! I don’t want to read all those messages! Are those people crazy? Why are they writing all this stuff!?
5) My plan to become international rock star. Apparently, Britney’s manager STILL didn’t get to read my blog.
6) Sapkowski – “Blood of Elves”. His collection “The Last Wish” was very cool so I was looking forward to read “Blood of Elves”. Unfortunately, the book starts with a huge info-dump. Well, that’s bad, but ok, “The Last Wish” started as a Spaghetti Western and it turned out great afterwards. Sad to say, but this one didn’t. The “training of the young padawan” parts are mostly uninteresting. Yes, there are some good ideas, Sapkowski has great imagination and I always like to read fantasy with Slavic names and toponyms, but the dynamics are wrong and the book turns out to be somewhat boring. I’m completely not motivated to read the sequels. I think Sapkowski is far, far better in short form. To be honest, “Blood of Elves” is not such a bad book, but after reading “The Last Wish” I expected much more.
7) The “best costume” jury on Istrakon convention. They had a best costume competition. There was a girl with horns on her head and walking around on hooves. HOOVES, man! Look at this:
and the jury DIDN’T give her the first award. What were they, blind?
